HIV cannot be transmitted from
Other bodily fluids contain quantities of virus that are too low to infect someone (Thaczuk 2009). For the infection to occur, HIV must enter the body directly via the bloodstream or the mucous membranes. Because HIV is not an airborne virus, it does not survive long outside of the body. There is no worry of becoming infected with HIV from:
- Mosquitoes or other biting insects
- Visiting hospitals
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Hugging
- Shaking hands
- Closed mouth kissing
- Sharing food and eating utensils
- Sharing toilets and showers
- Touching doorknobs
- Using public swimming pools
- Using public phones
- Casually living/ working or socialising with someone infected with HIV (CDC 2010).
