Opportunistic Infections
The weakened immune system allows the development of opportunistic infections (OIs). These are infections that take advantages of the weakened immune system. It is these infections that cause the death of AIDS patients. To healthy people with a normal immune system, these infections usually do not cause serious illnesses and life-threatening problems. Common opportunistic infections include Tuberculosis (TB), Salmonellosis, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Candidiasis, Cryptococcal meningitis, Toxoplasmosis and Cryptosporidiosis (Mayoclinic n.d.).
